Our take

This is the one we have been waiting on, and the one we twice refused to call. Two weeks ago we announced a Clear the Rack we could not prove was running; a week ago we took it back and explained why, which is that Nordstrom Rack embeds a list of every badge its site can paint into every page it serves, so finding the words in the source proves nothing at all. The test we committed to was the badge rendered on a real product. This morning it is on 48 of them, and the store publishes an end date. What we could read: a printed belted shirtdress at $18.50 against a $148 comparable value, a tiered midi dress at $23.98, straight-leg jeans at $23.98 down from $148, brushed ankle pants at $24.36 from $128, and a pointed-toe ballet flat at $33.74 from $140. The clearance page serves a rotating subset on every load, so treat those as evidence of the depth rather than a promise they will be waiting for you. Two things to hold onto: all sales are final, so buy the size you already own, and the extra 25% comes off at checkout on select clearance items, which means the number on the tile is often not the number you pay — it is lower. This runs through Monday.

Our take

New to this page, and it earns the place on paperwork as much as on price: J.Jill publishes the exact window in its own disclaimer — May 28 to September 7 — instead of the undated “limited time” most of this industry hides behind. An extra 40% on top of an already-marked price is the second-deepest cut here, and unlike the Rack these are not final sale, so a size gamble is recoverable. The sale rail we could read starts around $19.99, which for this brand’s linen and knit basics is well below where they normally settle. The word to weigh is “all”: the extra 40% applies across the sale section rather than to a curated subset, which is why the headline says last chance — this is the tail of the summer clear-out, and what is left is what is left. If you have been circling something in their sale since June, Monday is the day it stops being cheap.

Our take

The longest runway on this page, and the only pick here you can genuinely think about for a week. Talbots put a real window on it — September 3 to 13 — and says the discount appears in the bag, so there is nothing to type and nothing to mistype. An extra 30% on markdowns is a smaller headline than the Rack or J.Jill, but Talbots marks down deeply before the extra even applies, and it cuts the kind of clothes that survive a season rather than only the summer leftovers: the blazers, the trousers, the cotton sweaters. One exclusion to know before you drive anywhere — it does not work at Talbots Outlet or Clearance stores, only the main line. The separate 25–40% off select wear-now styles on the same banner says “last day”, and we take the store at its word on that, so if that is the one you want, it is today or not at all.

Our take

Three different numbers in eight days: an extra 70% through August 30, an extra 50% when we checked on the 31st, and an extra 60% as of this morning — the tracking tag on that banner is stamped with today’s date, so it went up today. We are showing it because it is real right now, and flagging the volatility because it is the honest thing to say about this particular retailer: nothing here holds still, and there is no published end date to plan around. The practical reading of that is simple. If the piece you want is here today, buy it today, because waiting for the 70% to come back is a bet we have now watched lose twice. Sale styles are final sale, so buy your known size — the ponte, the blouses, the ankle pants are where this brand runs deepest. The $50 off $200 offer on the same banner is a separate promotion and these normally do not stack; work out which one pays you more before you fill the bag, because on a $200 order the extra 60% almost always wins.

Our take

An upgrade on what we published on Monday, and worth explaining why. Last week Athleta was a flat up-to-60% section, and the “extra 25% off” you met on the way in was a credit-card sign-up offer rather than a markdown — we said so at the time. That has changed. The extra 30% is now in the store’s own sale banner, tagged as a Labor Day promotion that went live on September 1, and it is not a card offer. No end date is published, but Labor Day falls on Monday the 7th, which is the same cliff as two other picks on this page and the reasonable assumption to shop against. Most of the section still sits nearer 30–40% before the extra comes off, so sort by discount if you want the deep end rather than trusting the headline. Athleta clears its own current seasons rather than only dumping leftovers, which is why colours still selling at full price turn up in here.

Our take

Re-read this morning and unchanged for the third edition running, which is the whole character of this brand and the reason it keeps its place on a page where two picks moved in four days. Everlane does not run flash events, so its sale rail is a floor rather than a step toward something better next weekend — there is no version of this where waiting until Monday gets you a better number, only a worse size run. The value sits in the basics: the tees, the denim, the ballet flats, below where they normally bottom out. The 20% and 15% offers you will meet on the way in are email sign-up nudges on full-price stock, not this.

Our take

The only pick here with a code to type, and the only one that reaches full-price stock — everything else on this page is a discount on things already marked down. That is the trade. Twenty per cent is the smallest number on the page, but it applies to the print dresses and the jersey that Boden barely touches while they are still in season, which is exactly where this brand hurts. The code is the store’s own banner text rather than something we found on a coupon aggregator, and we want to be precise about the limit of that: we read it on Boden’s site this morning and did not put an order through, so treat it as verified to exist rather than verified in your cart. No end date is published; the name says Labor Day, which is Monday. The extra 20% off sale shoes and accessories alongside it is a separate offer on already-reduced stock, and the two are unlikely to combine.
